Program to Help Low-Income New Yorkers Reduce Energy Bills Gets Increased Funding from through NYSERDA in 2012
To help larger numbers of low-income households cut their energy bills in the coming year, funding for EmPower New York will increase by $18 Million, providing a total of $46 million in 2012, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced today.

At the July 19, 2011 Town of Brookhaven Board meeting, Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh took the time to recognize three area veterans. Korean War Veteran William Beatty from Centereach, Veteran George W. Egan from Patchogue and Viet Nam Veteran Eugene G. Smith were introduced to the Brookhaven Town Board and as well as the residents of Brookhaven.

Repeat of Town of Brookhaven High Bond Rating
The Town of Brookhaven was recently notified by Wall Street bond rating agencies that its high bond rating has been reaffirmed for the third time within one year. Standard & Poor’s declared that Brookhaven’s bond rating of AA+ with a stable outlook and agency commended the Town’s conservative budgeting and deep spending cuts.

On March 21, Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh was a guest speaker at Centereach High School’s 1st Annual Women’s “Herstory” event to celebrate Women’s History Month. Councilwoman Walsh, who is a graduate of the Middle Country School District, was there as a representative of women in government. “It was a pleasure being part of this wonderful event and meeting so many fine students who will be our future leaders. I thank the students and faculty for inviting me. They did a great job today,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Walsh Announce Town’s Division of Women’s Services 2011 Women’s Recognition Award Winners
Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh and Supervisor Mark Lesko have announced the thirteen women chosen to receive the 2011 Women’s Recognition Award at the 25th Annual Women’s Recognition Night on March 22 at 6:30pm at Town Hall. The event, which is open to the public, is sponsored by the Town’s Office of Women’s Services. The women chosen have demonstrated excellence in their endeavors in a variety of areas. Each was nominated by a member of the community and must either live or work in the Town of Brookhaven in order to qualify. Nominations were considered by members of the Town of Brookhaven’s Women’s Advisory Board and selected based on resumes and letters of recommendation.

Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh Judges the Newfield High School Cosmetology Competition
Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh was privileged to be among a distinguished panel judging the Annual Newfield High School Cosmetology Competition. Held on February 11, 2011 in the Cosmetology Laboratory at Newfield, the students were evaluated on their technique in areas of previous instructions for either hair coloring perfection or up-dos. The winning student will proceed on to the next level of the competition, progressing upward to the State Finals and hopefully the National Finals.

Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh Supports Area Veteran Causes
On Monday February 7, 2011, the Suffolk County Court complex in Central Islip hosted the grand opening of “The Veterans Court.” The court is geared toward helping veterans who are often arrested because they are dealing with unresolved psychological problems. In some non-violent cases, they may have their jail time waved if they agree to become enrolled in a treatment program at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

On February 2, 2011 Centereach High School students Courtney Maikisch and Gabrielle Massucci participated in Job Shadowing Day at Brookhaven Town Hall. Sponsored by the Middle Country Business Advisory Board, in partnership with both the Middle Country School District and Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh, the students spent time with Town employees and engaged in the activities in their future fields of interest.

Deputy Supervisor / Councilwoman Walsh Announces Town Funding to Construct Traffic Calming Roundabout at "Five Corners” in Ronkonkoma
At the January 25 Town Board meeting, a bond resolution sponsored by Deputy Supervisor/Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh was unanimously adopted to authorize the construction of a traffic calming roundabout at the intersection of Hawkins Avenue, Smith Road and Gatelot Avenue in Ronkonkoma. The main goal of the project is to improve traffic conditions and enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists.
